When a letter is shaded gray, it indicates that it does not appear in the word at all.

You also have the option to use the delete button to get rid of your guess and begin the process again. You have a total of six chances to properly guess the word. If you are unsuccessful, the game will tell you what the word is, and you will get another chance the next day.
